COTEHELE Quay Gig Club are celebrating the end of a successful season and the arrival of their new club kit.
The kit is black and green and the elm leaf logo was designed by club members, mother and daughter Rosie and Becky Fierek.
Gigs are traditionally built from elm wood and the markings on the leaf are similar to the shape of a gig with six oars.
Highlights of the season were the Isles of Scilly World Championships where every crew improved upon their performance from the year before. The men's A did exceptionally well ending up in 31st place;likewise the performances of our U16 squad and the men's A squad at the CPGA championships.
The U16s did well at Stithians earlier this month. The crew of Ben Crowle, Callum Mackellar, Joe and Sam Rogers and Rachel and Ben Tamblyn had only been rowing since May this year and this was their first championship. They had to row three hard races but they rowed strongly throughout with excellent coxing by Joy Treliving. They got through to the quarter-finals and ended up a respectable 11th out of 24 boats.
The men's championships saw sea conditions which were extremely challenging but the crew of James Boundy, Kevin Wheldon, Rob Rogers, Steve Butters, Dave Clarke, Joe Oddie, with cox Jeremy Lawrence, did superbly to get through to the quarter-finals. Their final position was 24th out of 63 boats.
In the CPGA Tribute Series the mens' A and U16s had the best results and the club's total final position was 22.
Another highlight was the Great River Race, a 21 mile race which takes place each year on the River Thames. Cotehele entered a Men's and a Ladies' crew and they both performed very well. Also the Ladies raised £1148 for Cancer Research in honour of Barry Bone, a much-loved former member who sadly died of cancer earlier this year.
The club will be rowing at weekends throughout the winter in preparation for the Isles of Scilly World Championships in April/May 2012. Anyone from age 11 and upwards is welcome to join.
