THE gates of a West Devon garden will be thrown open later this month, to raise money for two charities. The owners of Thorn Cottage in Brentor will be inviting visitors to their open garden on Saturday, May 17, from 2pm to 5pm, raising money for the Mary Budding Trust and St Luke's Hospice. The garden boasts a formal hedgerow area and a wild bluebell wood and afternoon teas, home made cakes and musical entertainment will be on offer. To help raise more funds, artist Elizabeth Wells has donated a painting with a retail price of around £300 to raffle off for St Luke's Hospice during the open garden. Raffle tickets are available to buy from Lynbridge Dental Practice in Tavistock, where the painting is currently on display. Admission to the open garden is £4, and there is limited access for wheelchairs and pushchairs. Dogs are welcome on leads and there will be plants on sale. To get to Thorn Cottage from Tavistock, take the road between the banks from Bedford Square, signposted for Lydford and Brentor. After four miles, pass the church on the hill and follow the open garden signs. Parking is available in a field next to the garden.
