FOR the Okehampton Show pig secretary the Devon Show has been a great success after one of her pigs was awarded the reserve male champion. Deborah Custance Baker, along with her husband Jonathan, saw their entries of Large Blacks also come away with firsts in the junior bore and gilt sections. The Custance Bakers entered five pigs this year and have four breeding sows, who farrow twice a year, back at their farm in Upton Pyne near Exeter. Deborah said: 'This show is a display of rural and agricultural life in Devon, which is open to everyone — both to the farmer and those of general public who might know nothing about farming. The Okehampton Show, which is held in August, is special in that all the events are crammed into one day and it is a more local affair. This show is an exciting one in that it is the first one of the year locally and it gets everybody going, especially the exhibitors, for the rest of the year.'
