THE Mount Kelly Concert Society has been re-launched for another season.
The Melvin Hall was packed recently for Sing Joyfully, presented by a capella group Voces8.
As the name implies, there are eight singers in the group, who between them covered an astonishing variety of styles. They are pitch-perfect, and blended with each other superbly.
They began with some early music, William Byrd and Heinrich Schütz, before striking into jazz, courtesy of Nat King Cole. Although a complete change of style, the blend was faultless; they continued with swing and more sacred music, with not a single note or word written down in front of them.
They sang in English, German, Latin, and some wordless singing as well!
Earlier in the day they had conducted a workshop with some of the pupils at Mount Kelly, and two lively songs — Uptown Funk and a Brazilian folk song — were performed as a result of this. There were spirituals, more jazz, rhythm and swing, and even some opera ‘with a difference’ as an encore!
This group clearly has great enthusiasm for what it is doing, and can readily convey its enjoyment to the audience.
The group has already made a name for itself, and is destined to go even further.
