As we age, we start to recognise that we deserve the finer things in life - chiefly high quality care and comfort.
In and around Tavistock, there are fantastic options for both, with safe and independent living with Home Instead, reliable mobility equipment with Unique Mobility, and dementia support with Tavistock Memory Cafe.
Dementia support at Tavistock Memory Cafe
Tavistock Memory Café has had a busy year, supporting an increasing number of people living with dementia and those who care for them.
We offer two social/support meetings on the second and fourth Saturday of each month in The Anchorage Centre, Tavistock; plus, a monthly informal chat and games group, and a monthly creative respite group, both in Tavistock Library. Members who sadly no longer have their loved ones share a fortnightly cuppa, and catch up with their Café friends in the Bedford hotel.
For those who are in the early/mid stages of dementia, we can offer courses of Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST). Here a small group meets weekly and benefits from stimulating chat and activity together. (See photo) CST is proven to slow the progression of dementia in some people.
Our services are provided free of charge, thanks to grants, generous donations and a team of wonderful volunteers.

Supporting safe, independent living at home
At Home Instead, our goal is to help you or your loved ones stay safe, well, and independent at home—where life is most comfortable. Preventing unnecessary hospital admissions is essential, especially for older adults who may face higher risks of complications and loss of independence after hospitalisation. Through personalised, preventive care, we work to keep you healthy at home and out of the hospital.
Our caregivers provide consistent monitoring and support to help you manage health conditions, medication, and daily activities. We focus on spotting early signs of illness or discomfort, and through proactive care, we can often prevent issues from escalating. For example, regular assistance with medication management and nutritious meals reduces the risk of falls, infections, or dehydration, which are common causes of hospital admissions.
We also work closely with families and healthcare providers to ensure a cohesive care approach. Our caregivers offer companionship and emotional support, reducing the impact of isolation on physical and mental health. With Home Instead’s compassionate, tailored services, you can enjoy peace of mind knowing that you or your loved one has the support needed to stay healthy and comfortable at home, avoiding unnecessary hospital visits.
Buy quality mobility equipment in person
Buying mobility products online can seem convenient, but it comes with several risks. While lower prices and easy ordering are tempting, many customers face issues once their product arrives. For example, a mobility scooter may arrive requiring assembly, and, without proper guidance on how to use it, you may struggle with its functionality. Problems can also arise if the product isn’t suitable for your needs, such as being unable to handle hilly terrain, or lacking sufficient battery range. When trying to return the product, many online sellers refuse returns if the item has been used, and often do not provide after-sales service or repairs.
To avoid these pitfalls, it's crucial to seek advice from a specialist who can assess your individual needs in person. A knowledgeable consultant can help ensure the product is right for you in terms of size, comfort, and functionality. At Unique Mobility, we offer a personalised assessment, home visits, full product handovers, and ongoing support, including servicing and repairs. We can also assist with warranty, insurance and finance options, making the buying process safer and more reliable.
