TAVISTOCK Golf Club had the honour of hosting Devon County Ladies Annual Championships.
On the Saturday there was a new ladies’ course record — with a gross 68, an albatross on the 12th and a hole in one on the fourth.
Tavistock’s Kayleigh Cann got through to the semi-finals but, after a great match, was beaten by her opponent Vicki Holloway from Torquay on the 17th.
The spectators enjoyed two days of top quality golf — the eventual winner was Torquay’s Keely Clarke. The first Devon Ladies Senior Championship, due to be played on the Friday, was abandoned due to extreme windy conditions.
Twenty seven teams took part in the ladies four ball better ball team event, the first open of the season. The winners with 88 points were the Stover team of Gill Lang, Alison Arnold, Liz Payne and Pat Durban with 88pts on count back from the Bude and Holsworthy team of Carol Skrzypczak, Judith Smith, Jean Reed and Jan Harrison. Tavistock’s team — Anne Dawson, Jenny Kay, Barbara Porter and Kay Tynan - came third with 86pts. Teignmouth were best visitors’ team. Alison Arnold from Stover won nearest the pin on the 7th and Holsworthy’s Jan Harrison won nearest the pin in two on the 14th.
In the men’s Lombard Trophy Qualifier and Medal — first in division one, Graham Ruth nett 70; second, David John, nett 72, on countback from David Johns, Adam Bridgewater and Dave Treble.
In division two Tim Baskerville had an excellent nett 69; second, Richard Rowe nett 70, third Dave Stratton, nett 72. Tim Baskerville will be now joining club professional Glenn Richards in the regional final at Burnham and Berrow.
In the men’s veterans George Bailey Trophy Graham March won the day with 40pts; runner up with 35 was Ian Rose on countback from Angus McPhie.
The lady veterans had their ‘Fun Day‘ which started in sunshine and ended with very heavy showers and hail which caught out the later groups. Nevertheless, it was an excellent day with the winning team of June Kendall, Jenny Kay and Norma Thewlis scoring 76pts on countback from Barbara Porter, Pat Wylie and Jean Thomas. Jenny Kay won the individual prize with 36pts.
In the Junior Westlake Trophy Jamie Ninnis scored 40pts, closely followed by Tom White with 39pts.
