YELVERTON Golf Club held its own version of the Ryder Cup this week.

The ‘Pounders Ryder Cup’ is played each year between the captain and vice captain’s teams. The format is four-ball matches consisting of six holes of better-ball, six holes of foursomes and six holes of individual match play. In blustery conditions the vice-captain’s team triumphed by a margin of 4 ½ to 2 ½.

The Yelverton Pounders saw a field of 32 competitors for their monthly Stableford. With favourable conditions eight players scored the competition scratch score. The eventual winner with 40 points was only decided on count back. Overall Results: 1, R Callicott 40 points; 2, A Warne 40pts; 3, C Cornish 39pts.

With winds gusting 50-60mph at Yelverton high scores became a premium with only a handful of players managing to equal or better the competition scratch score. A total of 28 players braved the conditions to compete in this Stableford competition for the Neil Pierce Trophy. Neil was a respected and much loved past ‘president’ of the veteran’s section.

With a great score of 38 points in such challenging conditions Peter Adams took first place to win the trophy. Results: 1, Peter Adams 38pts; 2, Nick Ring 37pts; 3, David Coombs 36pts.

Good weather conditions attracted 33 players this week for the Yelverton mid-week Stableford. Result: 1, L Lawson 41pts; 2, P Selley 39pts; 3, B Searle 37pts.

The veterans’ Stableford this week was played on a sun kissed beautiful looking Yelverton course. Results: 1, John Adams, Ray Curran and Christian Prosper 81pts; 2, Don Read, Andy Young and Pip Horsley 79pts; 3, David Miles, Peter O’Neill, Brian Medhurst and Mike Ayres 77pts.

This week Yelverton Golf Club went ‘All American’ for the day as club officials and members attended a fun day held at American Golf — Plympton, Plymouth. The weather conditions were poor but this did not deter golfers of all ages from braving the elements and ‘going for the challenges’.
